Dragon Army Program Director - David Newton
Coach David started the Dragon Army program in 2014 with three teams and has guided the program’s expansion to more than a dozen successful teams. He is the only Ganon Baker Certified Skills Trainer in the state of NJ — stressing skill development is the foundation of Dragon Army!
Coach David spent two years each at Watchung Hills High School and Newark Academy. His JV teams went 35-9 and captured the inaugural Somerset County JV title at Watchung Hills. He then took over as Varsity Head Coach of a rebuilding Newark Academy team and doubled their win total in his second season. In 2018, he is starting his tenure as Girls Varsity coach at Bernards High School.
In addition, to the AAU and high school programs, Coach David has coached at several professional camps/combines in Orlando, Las Vegas, and Lithuania.
Coach David takes pride in watching his kids develop friendships, maturity, and confidence over the years — it’s all about progress!
High School Program Director - Jacob Weissman
Coach Jacob joined Dragon Army in 2016 and has quickly established himself as a backbone of the program. He guides the four oldest teams in their development and college recruitment, plus works with all the younger players in skill developments over the summer.
Coach Jacob played on the winningest team in Millburn High School history and on an AAU team that produced 4 D1/professional players. He spent two seasons as a manager and video coordinator at Brooklyn College and continues to train many high-level players.
With a real competitive streak and a fiery attitude at every practice and game, Coach Jacob drives his players to higher level of success each and every day!
Youth Program Director - Jamel Fields
Coach Jamel played D1 basketball at both Fairfield University and St. Peter’s University, spending many of those seasons as an impact starter. As a lifelong point guard, he has a depth of knowledge to teach his young players.
Coach Jamel has an unmatched enthusiasm for the game and imparts his love of basketball onto his guys. He joined Dragon Army in 2017 and immediately became an integral part of the program’s success. He oversees all the younger teams and also works with the older guys throughout the summer. He loves to see his players respect the game and play it the right way!
11th and 10th Teams - Jacob Weissman
9th and 8th Red Teams - Chris Burke
Coach Chris joined Dragon Army in 2018 to work with our older teams. Coach Chris was a key player for St. Peter’s University, including their 2011 conference championship. “SilkySmoove” had an NBA tryout with the New York Knicks and now works in the NBA offices in Secaucus.
Coach Chris has walked the walk and knows exactly how hard our older players need to work in order to reach their dreams of playing in college. He often works out with his players in practice, and his unique skill set motivates his players!

Coach Moe was a star player at Kearny High School. He played four years of D1 basketball at St. Peter’s and a fifth year of D3 at Kutztown University. After graduating Kutztown, Coach Moe stayed on as an assistant coach focusing on player development for one year. Coach Moe was an assistant coach at St. Peter’s High School. He has spent time working with the Dominican U17 National Team and several NBA camps.
Coach Moe brings a great knowledge of skill development to his players — he knows what it takes to be a D1 player and inspires his players to carry that work ethic!
1st and 2nd Teams - Shameka Christon and Mark Newton
Coach Shameka brings the highest level of playing expertise to our program. During her senior year playing at Arkansas, she was named the SEC player of the year. She then had a successful career of over a dozen years in the WNBA, including being part of Team USA.
Coach Shameka has an unbelievable knowledge of the game from in both skill development and tactics. She has a calm demeanor and a great way of explaining concepts to the younger players. Our players have a ton of fun learning from her every day in practice!
Coach Mark brings 4 decades of of coaching experience to our youngest players. After a successful college football career at Hobart, he spent 7 years coaching high school basketball and football in NY. He has coached youth basketball in NJ for many years and he joined Dragon Army in 2016.
Coach Mark is patient and keeps it fun for the young guys, but he drives them hard and builds their skills and confidence every single week!
Fall 2016-Spring 2017 will offer highly competitive boys teams from 4-9th grade. We are forming new 2nd grade and 3rd grade AAU teams in the November 2016. We also will have a K-3rd grade “Developmental Program” for boys and girls, with a new session each winter.
